’09’s Most Talked-About Brand: Microsoft
Dec 14, 2009
- Elaine Wong
Kanye West, Kate Gosselin and Michael Jackson were among the top trending topics on Twitter in 2009, but Microsoft and other tech brands dominated the blogosphere, per Zeta Interactive.
In a report compiled exclusively for Brandweek, the New York-based interactive marketing agency ranked brands based on the volume and number of online posts (through Facebook, Twitter and blogs), as well as the overall tone (positive, negative) of these conversations. Four of the top 10 companies on this year’s list were tech brands: Microsoft, Google, Apple and BlackBerry. Retailers Target and Walmart placed in the fifth and 10th spots, respectively.

There are two types of scanning technologies available for inventory count integration into Microsoft Dynamics RMS and POS. The easiest way to think of them is online and offline. They both allow you to count your inventory and get those counts into your retail system for inventory reconciliation purposes. Where they differ is how the data gets into your system.Â
- Online scanners connect to the live system and record all counted inventory as a “Physical Count” within the system. The advantages are you get live feedback to your inventory counting and the data is already in your system without any additional steps. The disadvantages are these solutions can be costly, require a strong wireless infrastructure, and are often tied to a physical store due to license or software restrictions. InterDyn LANAC Technology resells these solutions and for many customers online scanners are a powerful addition to their retail system.Â
- Offline scanners are standalone units used to scan barcodes and record quantities. All data is stored on the unit and must be connected to a computer to upload the data. The advantages are these units get long battery life, aren’t dependant on an infrastructure, are portable, and are very cost effective. The disadvantages are they require extra time and steps to dock the devices to a computer, upload the data, and import the data into RMS. InterDyn LANAC Technology also sells these devices at very competitive prices.Â
Another cost effective solution to using these scanning technologies with your inventory counts is renting them. InterDyn LANAC Technology currently offers Honeywell (formerly Metrologic) Optimus S scanners for rental with daily or weekly rates. These are reliable scanners optimized for fast offline inventory counting. They come configured and ready for inventory counting. They also include InterDyn LANAC’s documentation for using the scanners, uploading the data to your computer, importing to RMS, and processing your inventory counts. Additional inventory training and documentation is also available.

If you are like many users, you probably use Microsoft Internet Explorer to surf the web. Even if you don’t use it for everyday websurfing, you probably have it installed on your computer, and need to pay special attention to this.
Microsoft has releases a special security bulletin this week which contains a CRITICAL update to several different verisons of Internet Explorer across almost every supported operating systems they have.
The details of this bulletin are posted here, if you would like to read about it:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS10-002.mspx
To make sure you are protected against malicious websites which may exploit this vulnerability, do the following:
For IE 7.0, 8.0:
- Open your browser, and go to Safety>Windows Update. Windows Vista/7 users will see the following window(Windows XP users will be directed to a website)
- You may be prompted for critical updates if your Automatic updates are turned on and set to download only, otherwise click the Check for updates link on the left hand side.
- Once checking for updates has completed, you can view the critical updates that are listed to be installed, or simply install them.
- You will be prompted for a reboot of your computer.
- After a reboot, you can check for updates again. If no critical updates are found, you can be reasonably sure you are now protected.
- If you would like to check that the update has been installed, open your control panel, go to Add/Remove Programs(Windows XP) or Programs and Features(Windows Vista/7), check or click to view updates, and look for Hotfix number 987207. Note: Detailed information regarding Hotfix 987207 is avaiable here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978207
